Shortly after being interrupted by a literal car crash (…), a host of captivating cannabis-themed conversations ensue.
In typical Friendly Aussie Podcast style, we kick off by getting Matt to introduce himself. Once a day labourer and a professional diver, Matt’s entry into the cannabis scene wasn’t from a direct or traditionally corporate route – but rather, one driven by his enduring passion for the plant. This is a legacy that has kept him and his various companies in good stead and high regard amongst the community, leading all the way up to the present day.
When we asked him to give us a better understanding of what got him to where he is now, he offers us an origin story of how he seized upon a series of fleeting opportunities to make his dreams come true. It’s an amazing story that reflects his general character; his resourcefulness, optimism and grit. From the outset, it’s clear to see that this guy means business… but dig a little deeper, and it becomes profoundly obvious that it is his love for cannabis – and for helping others with this medicine – which serves as a foundation for everything he does.
This is a human being who has created something out of nothing by following his passion wherever it took him – and it’s for this reason that we were honoured to sit down and chat with Matt for over an hour and a half.
It’s also why we wanted to bring light to Matt’s latest effort to expand his ability to help medicinal cannabis patients. The Australian Medical Cannabis Industry in 2022
Given that we were speaking with the Founder of MediCann Health and MediCann Clinics, we couldn’t help but get into the weeds with Matt about the current state of the medicinal cannabis scheme. In doing so, we uncovered his perspectives on the legal, regulatory and legislative developments over recent months.
Most of them seemed broadly optimistic in regards to the long term future of the scheme. With that said, it was very interesting to listen to Matt break down the problems he sees with the current framework, all while explaining some of the political advocacy work and clinical trials he has conducted, in contrast to his firm opposition to bending the existing regulatory boundaries.
As Matt explained on the podcast, there are good reasons to avoid the wrath of the regulator. Not only are there already a range of companies who make a habit of testing the limits of the legislation – MediCann isn’t exactly a large corporate player who can afford to get penalised.
He also expressed that it’s the health and wellbeing of his patients that matters the most, at the end of the day – and for this reason, he considers it deeply important for the rules and guidelines to be respected.
Yes We Cannabis!
In light of recent announcements from the Australian Greens, we asked Matt how we felt about the prospect of recreational cannabis legalisation down under.
He seemed deeply excited to act upon the opportunities that would emerge from such a development, and viewed it as an additional opportunity for his business – but emphasised that the important thing to him right now is providing medicinal support to the people who need it most.
