When looking to select your cannabis seeds, you need to be highly conscious of two or three main things. Cannabis has three primary varieties: Indicas, Sativas and Hybrids. Additionally, CBD-rich medicinal marijuana and auto-flowering hybrids are also commonly grown. Does this all sound a little confusing? It’s not, actually. It’s super simple, just keep reading!

Seeds of Sativa

Sativas typically have a much higher THC content than other strains, but are low in CBD. This produces a much more cerebral, uplifting, energetic high. Sativas can induce feelings of optimism and wellbeing. They are known for their spacey and hallucinogenic effects, and are a good choice for daytime smoking. Sativas are this writer’s personal favourite.

Sativa plants are typically known for being tall. Their leaves make them easy way to recognise; the sativa strain’s leaves are particularly long and thin. They are a little trickier to grow indoors, thanks to their height and foliage. But, don’t be discouraged! You can still grow Sativas indoors, provided you learn how to train your plants, and have adequate height available in your grow tent.

Imbibed by Indica

While Indica strains also contain relatively high levels of THC, they counterbalance this with higher levels of the non-psychoactive CBD. The combined effect provides a stronger body-stone effect, otherwise known as ‘couchlock’. If you’re Indica… you’re generally In Da Couch.

Indicas are typically smaller in size; in general, they can grow to be quite bushy. Some stains are more compact than others, but they all tend to grow wider and rounder than Sativas. Many Indica plants look a lot like shrubs. Indica’s typically grow out lots of smaller side colas. They are the easiest to grow indoors.

Indicas are excellent for relaxation, stress relief and feeling calm. They’re also highly effective for body pain relief, and are often used to treat insomnia. Many regular cannabis users like to use an Indica at night as a sleep aid.

Crossing the Streams

Hybrids are where these two types of cannabis are crossbred, leading to a mixture of different traits from their genetic parents. They can be exactly 50% sativa and 50% indica, or anywhere in between. For hybrids, it’s crucial to know the genetic properties of your specific seeds. Knowing the parents will give you an idea of when to vegetate and flower.

People purport many diverse effects from hybrids. They have become a fan favourite, for most smokers. Sativas can sometimes cause symptoms of anxiety, and Indicas can make you too stoned to move. So, a mix of the two only makes sense. It imparts a nice, mellow high, allowing one to feel relaxed, awake and happy!

Automatic Buddage

In recent years “Auto-flowering” cannabis seeds have exploded in popularity – and for good reason! This variety of cannabis automatically flowers, regardless of light schedule. They are generally ready from seed to harvest in only 60 or 70 days, which is truly incredible!

Auto-flowering cannabis emerged from the species known as “Ruderalis”. Ruderalis is typically a short, stalky plant. It generally won’t grow much more than a metre in height. After the seed sprouts, the plant will flower regardless of light schedule at around 21-30 days, hence the term “auto-flowering”.

Ruderalis naturally contains very low levels of THC. After being crossbred with Sativas and Indicas, however, many auto-flowering strains have come to contain high levels of THC and still automatically flower.

Ruderalis does tend to have higher amounts of CBD present, which means that auto-flowering buds tend to make for excellent medical marijuana!

So where do I buy cannabis seeds from in Australia?

Obtaining the Seeds

While there are no official retail stores in Australia selling cannabis seeds, there are a few companies online that sell seeds. Some do ship out of Australia, while others are based internationally. Know that if your seeds are found by the Australian Border Force, they will be crushed. However, the likelihood of this is quite low.

Caveman Seeds by Matt Cave allow you to pick up seeds inside of Australia, with free postage on orders over $100. Typically, a pack of 3 seeds will cost you $35 AUD, and a 5 pack $50. Caveman seeds do have a range of Sativas, Indicas, Hybrids and auto-flowering buds.

Southern Star Seeds is another option located in Australia. They provide less of a ‘shopping cart’ experience than other options; however, they have been around for a long time, and have a good reputation. Most of their stock are regular old seeds, which go for around $80 for 11 of them. Shipping the seeds is another $10.

Aussie Canna is a newer Australian seedbank that provides most seeds in 3 packs for $35. They have a range good range of auto-flowers and feminised seeds! They also have a few of their own custom branded products! Shipping is free when you order over $100!

Do understand that when purchasing from Australia, you will likely be using Paypal/Bank Transfer as a payment transfer. This does contain your personal information. If you’re paranoid or cautious, this may not be your best option…

You could also find seeds in Australia by getting lucky and finding them in your baggie. Particularly if you’re procuring some awesome bush cannabis, there will be seeds in abundance. You can try these out and see how they go! Although you won’t know their exact genetics, it’s a bit of fun to try and grow an unknown seed.

You can also jump on Instagram to look for vendors. There are incredible Australian breeders selling seeds on Insta; just follow the Aussie cannabis hashtags, and you’ll find them 😉

If you’re after a more private transaction, perhaps an international order is your best bet. We recommend the Attitude SeedBank. They have an enormous collection of strains from the best breeders in the world! Their stealth shipping is great; ensure you use it! Never had a problem here. They also throw tend to throw in a lot of freebie seeds for promotions. They accept cryptocurrency, and always hand out extra seeds when purchasing with Bitcoin, Litecoin, and the like!

If you’re needing to buy cryptocurrencies in Australia, checkout BTC Markets. They’re low fee, easy to deal with, and I have personally used them for years.

Be on the Lookout

If you can purchase feminised seeds for the strain, you want do it! You only want female plants, as they are what produce your flowers. So, you’ll save a lot of time and money if you can get feminised seeds.

Be aware of your grow tent’s size, and ensure your seeds will have enough room to grow. You don’t want to buy 100% Sativas if your tent is only 120cm tall (and realistically, you probably don’t want your 100% sativa plants to be grown indoors).

Finally, try to purchase from reputable breeders. Not all seeds are created equal. A little bit of research into the breeders of the strain will go a long way. There are usually multiple versions of the same strain, which have been mixed in similar ways. If you have different parents, you’re liable to get different results.

Just do a google search on the breeder and see if their reputation holds up. I’ve had a lot of great experiences with Royal Queen Seeds. Checking others’ past grow journals is also a great idea. Consider using Grow Diaries to track your own progress, as well as view other people growing the same genetics!

Beginner Strain Recommendations

We’ve created a small list of strains that are easy to grow, and we’ve organised them into their genetic varieties. It’s important to note that the non-auto-flowering plants’ finish time is based on their flowering time. Typically, you will vegetate your plants for 2-4 weeks before flipping them to flower – so add that on to their completion time.

Awesome work but feedback is that one of the newer seed suppliers sent me 8 green seeds out of 9 after 100 + dollars. Reached out by email and phone msg but nothing. Delivery was awesome though.
